BEAM BEOWULF SYSTEMS

Introduction

Since the first computing devices there has always been those seeking solutions to problems that require greater or quicker performance. In order to appease such users, the industry has traditionally adopted two approaches. Firstly, and most obvious, there is always a market for faster processors. Each new version enables some previously unattainable application desire to be achieved. Secondly, and the approach adopted here, the work can be split between a number of processors. There are a number of differing topologies. Processors can share memory, have independent memory and use a communications system, or a mixture of the two. The beowulf systems presented here are based upon a cluster approach where single/dual processor nodes with their own memory are connected by a network to provide high compute power.
