Fedora_2 System Install

The standard Fedora 2 distribution of Linux is installed in the standard way. This section gives an overview of this and install notes for a HomeSys server. The system should be initially booted from a DVD,CDROM, floppy or network boot using the Fedora_2 boot image.

The following gives the basic installation sequence:-

  1. Place the boot Fedora_2 Linux DVD in the DVD drive and switch on the system.

  2. At the boot: prompt type, text followed by the Enter key. (Note: you can ignore this and use the GUI install method if you wish)

  3. Choose “Skip” CD Media test

  4. At the "Welcome to Fedora" screen press the OK button by pressing the Enter key.

  5. Choose the Language "English"

  6. Choose the Keyboard "uk".

  7. Choose the NFS install if installing accross network. In this case manually set the IPAddress and other network parameters for the local network. To install from beam.beamnet the host is "beam.beamnet" and the directory "/dist/fedora_2/os".

  8. At the "Installation Type" screen choose "Custom System".

  9. At the "Automatic Partitioning" screen choose "Manually Partition". This screen may not appear if there are already partitions on the hard disk.

  10. At the "Disk Partitioning Setup" screen choose "Disk Druid".

  11. Create the following Partitions:-

    Partition Mount Point

    Size

    Type

    /

    10GByte (or bigger as available ideally 20GByte)

    Linux ext3


    1GByte

    Linux Swap

    /home
    4GByte
    Linux ext3

    /data

    Rest of disk space

    Linux ext3

  12. If you are re-installing remember to set the option to re-format the partitions.

  13. At the "Choose Partitions to Format" screen press the OK button.

  14. At the "Boot Loader Configuration" screen choose the GRUB boot loader.

  15. At the following "Boot Loader Configuration" screens choose the defaults.

  16. At the "Network Configuration" screen clear the bootp/dhcp flag and enter the network information.

  17. At the "Hostname Configuration" screen enter the full host name (include network domain).

  18. At the "Firewall Configuration" screen choose "No firewall".

  19. At the "Language Support screen" choose "English (USA)" and "English (Great Britain)".

  20. At the "Default Language" screen choose "English (Great Britain)".

  21. At the "Time Zone Selection" screen choose "Hardware clock is set to GMT" and the Time zone of "GB".

  22. At the "Root Password" screen enter the root users password.

  23. At the "Add User" screen, don't add any users. This will be done later.

  24. At the "Authentication Configuration" screen press the OK button (unless you wish to allow all local network users access in which case you can enable NIS or LDAP as appropriate for your local network).

  25. At the "Package Group Selection" screen choose "Everything" (down the bottom of the list) and press the OK button.

  26. At the "Installation to begin" screen press the OK button.

  27. The installation will be performed, this will take about 45 minutes. Insert the second and third CD-ROM's when required if installing from CD's

  28. At the "Bootdisk" screen press the No button.

  29. At the "Video Card Configuration" screen press the OK button. At the "Monitor Setup" screen press the "OK" option.

  30. At the "X Configuration" screen choose appropriate settings for your graphics card and monitor (eg. Colour Depth = 24, Resolution = 1280x1024, Default Desktop = KDE, Default Login = Graphical.

  31. On the "Complete" screen, press the OK button and remove the DVD.

  32. The system will reboot and present a graphical setup screen. Setup the basic options here.

The Linux system has now been installed and basic configuration performed.
